BROOKHAVEN, GA — Police say 8-month old Kamonie Whitehead died after the girl’s mother and her boyfriend beat her with a belt.
The couple called 911 on August 1 to report Kamonie was making a “loud gurgling noise” and that when they checked on her they found her unresponsive. The girl’s mother, Shavone Whitehead, performed CPR on her daughter until paramedics arrived.
Kamonie was taken to Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta Egleston Hospital, where doctors would find the baby suffering from injuries to her legs, buttocks, chin and arms, multiple rib fractures and a possible skull fracture.
Sadly, after being on life support for the last two weeks, Kamonie was pronounced dead Saturday night.
When police questioned Whitehead about the girl’s injuries, she initially denied she was responsible, but later admitted the couple would beat her baby with a belt to punish her.
Just how bad could this baby have been? With the injuries she suffered its like she routinely set the house on fire, stole the family car for drug-fueled parties in downtown Atlanta, and was dealing crack to the neighbors from her crib.
“The detective handling this case has been in law enforcement 24 years and he has said this is probably one of the worst incidents of child abuse or child cruelty that he has seen,” said Officer Carlos Nino, with the Brookhaven Police Department.
Whitehead and her boyfriend were subsequently charged with cruelty to children and aggravated battery. Charges against the couple are expected to be upgraded once police have obtained Kamonie’s autopsy report.
Both Whitehead and Wilson are denying being criminally responsible for Kamonie’s death.
