CHICAGO, IL – Police have arrested 24-year-old Caroline Woods after they say she and her boyfriend tortured her 7-year-old-son for two years.
The boy was found Sunday morning, running down the street in a dirty diaper. He told authorities that his mother and her boyfriend forced him to live in a closet, beat him regularly, and fed him only protein shakes and cans of okra.
Prosecutors say the boy claimed to have been beaten with an extension cord, a pole, and a baseball bat. Even more disturbing is the boy’s claims that he was once forced to sit on the stove as his genitals were burned with a curling iron.
These allegations were later backed up by a court-appointed doctor who examined the boy and said that the he had the most injuries he had ever seen on one person. The boy and his 2-year-old sister are now in state custody.
Woods was arrested and charged with assault. She was denied bail by the judge who called her actions “depraved” and told Woods she was “a danger to society.” Police are still looking for her boyfriend.
According to others who lived in the high-rise condos, they saw no signs of abuse but some admitted they didn’t even know Woods had a 7-year-old son as he had never been allowed outside. Workers at the condo said the couple were squatters who had, up until now, avoided being evicted.
“They’ve been trying to put the guy out, he’s a squatter,” said one worker. “They can’t serve the papers to him because he’s always hiding.”
The Illinois Department of Children and Family Services said they have had no contact with the family, but Woods’ uncle said she told family in 2012 that her son was being sexually abused by a relative. He added the family lost contact with Woods after she was accused of mistreating her grandmother she was caring for at the time.
