JACKSONVILLE, FL – Police have charged 18-year-old Dylan Brougham with murder after he allegedly beat his grandmother to death for hiding his beer.
Police responded to a residence on a domestic disturbance call last month to find 69-year-old Joyce Courson sitting in the hallway in a puddle of blood.
She was suffering from severe cuts and bruises to her face and more on her stomach and chest.
Courson told the officers that her grandson, Brougham, had flew into a rage because she’d taken his beer and wouldn’t tell him where she hid it.
She said he first punched several holes in the walls before shoving her to the floor. That’s when Brougham held her down and repeatedly punched her in the face, then started kicking her.
Another roommate in the house ran out of his room to investigate when he heard the woman yelling for help, but Brougham had already left the home.
Police would find the teen walking near the home and took him into custody. He told police that when he gets upset, “he blacks out in rage and does not remember what he does.”
Initially charged with aggravated battery, Brougham has now been charged with murder after Courson died from her injuries one week later.
According to Brougham’s mother, her son has issues but she does not believe her son meant to kill her mother.
“I am sick for the loss of my mother. I am sick for the loss of my son. I don’t feel he deserves to go to prison. I don’t feel in my heart that he meant to do this to the severity that he did,” Tracey Broughan said. “It’s just so hard. I am so emotional. I am lost without Mom. We were everything together.”
On that note, Tracey Brougham was charged with beating her mother back in June after her son told police he’d witnessed her beat his grandmother on multiple occasions. The case was later dropped and, it seems, Courson resumed her job as a punching bag.
