SPARTANBURG, SC – A South Carolina woman was arrested after she hit her young son after he made a Mother’s Day card for his grandmother but not for her.
Police were called to a home on Thursday where Tracey Murphy told them that her daughter, 30-year-old Shontrell Murphy, hit her 6-year-old son repeatedly in the head.
She added that when she asked her daughter why she hit the boy, Shontrell responded “because she could.”
Shontrell explained to police that she was simply disciplining her son, who she said had behavioral issues, and that she did not believe she did anything wrong.
However, Shontrell’s daughter told police that the real reason why her mother smacked her brother around was because he had made a Mother’s Day card for their grandmother, but not one for Shontrell.
The daughter said her mother found the card and ripped it up when she realized it was not for her. According to the girl, her mother then repeatedly hit the boy in the head “hard.” The children added that their mom regularly hit them and that they were afraid of her.
Officers verified seeing a torn, handmade card on the floor and arrested Shontrell on a charge of cruelty to children. She has since been released from the Spartanburg County Detention Center.
Her son was taken to the hospital to be checked out and later released.
