SENECA FALLS, NY – A couple has been jailed after a 3-year-old boy was beaten so badly that he is currently on life support with no brain activity.
Police responded to the apartment of Donald and Alison Bovio on Saturday after Donald called to report his stepson had fallen down the stairs.
First-responders would find the boy lying unconscious on the kitchen floor with substantial trauma to his head and body.
The boy was airlifted to the hospital in critical condition where he’s currently on life support after suffering a brain hemorrhage. He’s unable to breathe on his own and is showing no brain activity.
Doctors would determine the injuries the boy had suffered were not the result of falling down stairs, but rather an assault.
After questioning the couple, and based on information from the doctors who examined the boy, police arrested the couple on charges of assault in the first degree.
Court documents say the couple allegedly beat the boy “with a belt numerous times and intentionally caused his head to strike a hard floor surface.”
Additional charges are expected to be filed when the couple is indicted on Thursday. They are currently being held on $50,000 cash bail.
“It is the worst case of child abuse I have seen in my career. By far,” Seneca Falls Police Chief Stuart Peenstra.
