PEARL RIVER, LA – A 20-year-old woman has been accused of beating a 46-year-old man to death who was recovering from brain tumor surgery.
While people were out enjoying themselves on the Pearl River on Saturday, an argument started between two large groups at a sandbar.
Apparently, the disagreement was over one group throwing bottles into the river and the other group telling them to stop.
Jeffrey Howell, 46, was a part of the latter group. He had recently survived a brain tumor surgery and still had the staples in his head.
The argument turned physical and Howell ended up dead from blunt-force trauma to the head. An autopsy would later reveal Howell had been hit near the scar from his surgery.
“If you cup your hand behind your left ear, that’s where the incision was,” said St. Tammany Coroner Dr. Charles Preston.
After talking with witnesses at the scene, 20-year-old Blaine Manalle was arrested and charged with second-degree murder. She’s currently in the St Tammany Parish Jail with a $250,000 bond.
Cameron Alphonso, 21, was also arrested. Initially charged with manslaughter, he was also charged with second-degree murder after talking to additional witnesses.
Howell’s friends say they are devastated, especially since Howell had been looking forward to his future after surviving brain surgery.
“Jeff was always the one to make sure everybody got home safe and all the children were taken care of,” said Janice O’ Berry. “He was a protector of sorts, I like to refer to him as that.”
